The Details

My Motivations.

I believe that everyone deserves a dignified, satisfying life, and that this includes you- and me. The insertion of money into relational dynamics, prohibiting us from sharing our skills and resources with one another is one of the ways that Capitalism affirms hierarchies of worth whilst de-skilling and fragmenting us. I want to reject this as fully as I am able to. I believe all humans are equally worthy of access to support, guidance and care, whether they are unpaid, lowly paid, or otherwise. Capitalism disciplines us into believing that we are ‘rational’ beings who will seek to exploit one another at every opportunity. I refuse to believe that. I’ve been delighted over the last few years to have my group work deeply enriched by people who could not have paid the standard rate- this is solidarity, not charity.

My Own Context.

It has been occurring to me recently that if you’re fairly new to these ways of pricing, you might assume that someone would only offer this if they didn’t really need the money. (Understandable, as we are repeatedly told by Girl Boss Feminism that we need to get super abundant in order to let our wealth ripple out etc etc- although the mythical day of redistribution never arrives- that’s the Capitalism again for you). It might be surprising to learn that I really do need the money. I am unwilling to compromise my family’s privacy in the ways those of us doing business on the internet in 2018 might’ve done, but I want to be clear that I have some very complex financial responsibilities. 

I am also someone who works limited hours in my business- partly through ‘choice’ (caring responsibilities for my children, devoting working hours to my unpaid role co-running Community Care Banks I Co-Founded with friends) and partly because I have Long Covid and my capacity can fluctuate significantly. 

So there are edges beyond which I cannot increase my income without increasing my prices. I am entirely unprepared to market my work in the way I would need to if I were to increase my prices. I think carefully about my standard rates, and consider them to be very fair.

Here in 2026, I am supporting a substantial increase in the use of my solidarity rate in Composting (like a membership). This has implications for my flexibility on price for other projects.

I am also recovering the stability of my business from a really difficult year health wise in 2025 (when I was physically and then mentally wiped out for huge chunks of time by Long Covid, was misdiagnosed with Lung Cancer, and endlessly navigating the medical hellscape that anyone with a chronic illness will be familiar with).

Requests.

When choosing the price that is the best fit for you, please bear the following in mind.

• For finite offerings, I am always happy to further extend a payment plan, with no additional cost. I don’t believe that people who need longer to pay should pay more, especially in the face of the overinflation of payment plans in the coaching industry that wildly outstrip interest rates etc. So, if you could pay the full amount over 12 months rather than 6, for example, please contact me to arrange this.

• For something long term like Composting. I understand that people’s circumstances fluctuate over time. Please check in as to whether the rate you are paying feels like a fair exchange in the context of your circumstances and mine. There are some markers you could consider, although I do understand that these are not entirely straightforward, as they may seem. In general, I wouldn’t consider the solidarity rate suitable for someone with savings, who can pay to travel abroad on holiday, or who can eat out regularly for leisure. The invitation to use the solidarity rate is to keep someone out of financial distress, (as I know it does for plenty of people), not to alleviate any discomfort in choosing to pay the standard rate for something so valuable over something else. (What is discomfort and what is distress? I’m sure we might reach a wide range of conclusions about where these lines blur, and that’s ok. I only request that you make an assessment that feels honest to you. This is all part of practicing Anti-Capitalism).

• I strive for a culture of radical generosity and hospitality in my business (and life!). If you have limited financial resources at this time, could you consider how you might meet me in reciprocity here? Perhaps there are people you are connected to that I might appreciate an introduction to, or maybe you’re a member of a particular group where my work is likely to be well received and you might give it a meaningful share. I’d be just as grateful for you facilitating such visibility for someone you meet in one of my groups as for me, or in fact for The Portal, the platform where my group work takes place.
