AI Policy to meet this moment

Background

Whilst I recognise that “AI” has the potential to include positive developments, e.g., in healthcare screening breakthroughs, I have enormous concerns about the use of AI in daily life and by small business owners, particularly those of us doing relational work.

My perspective on AI includes the context in which we meet it- Last Stage Capitalism, a culture of exploitation, inequality and injustice.

I expect that our relationships with AI will follow a similar trajectory to our relationships with social media. In simple terms, everything will be fun, free and easy… until it’s not. See: enshittification.

My conclusions about AI use are rooted in

The complex system that is the body is a field of ways of knowing, all of which work together ecologically to provide the necessary information.

The Details

I don’t use generative AI.

I don’t use agentic AI.

Assistive AI is built into Zoom, and I use it to offer closed captions on all calls I’m hosting.

I don’t use AI notetakers in my client work. In 1:1 work, I take notes by hand and provide a typed combination of reflections by email. I treasure this part of my work, noting that my own sense making in revisiting the conversation reveals new layers of insights. I am happy to spend time and energy on this as a critical part of the value I offer my clients.

I do not use AI notetakers as a client or human.

I do not admit other people’s AI notetakers to group calls- this is incompatible with regard for privacy and consent.

If a client would like to use an AI notetaker for a 1:1 session with me, I would like to know what will happen to the content, and consent is at my discretion.

I can’t and don’t coach or thought partner on AI integration, but can and do enthusiastically coach and thought partner on disentanglement from AI, without shame.

I don’t decline podcast interviews or guest workshops etc automatically if the host is using some kind of AI, but ask that I’m provided with clarity about how AI is in play and where my words are ending up.

As with all issues and dilemmas arising in my client work, I believe that everyone’s behaviours emerge almost inevitably from the layering of their contexts- personal and systemic, known and unknown. I hold the humans who are experimenting with AI in my unconditional positive regard, whilst remaining committed to all of the above in my own approach.

Resisting De-skilling

Resisting De-skilling

BUT EVERYTHING IS AWFUL SO WHAT CAN WE DO

I believe we must share in the responsibility (and risk) of building a viable alternative.

You’ll find my group work on The Portal- a Digital Learning Neighbourhood built by Sally Burns (a mother of 2 in Brighton, UK) and all who believe in it. The Portal is the antidote to the enshittification of the internet and the technofascism developing elsewhere.

Still in an enhanced MVP (Minimum Viable Product) phase and needing broader investment from others who believe this (*gestures broadly everywhere*) cannot be all there is, The Portal is on a pathway to becoming the true alternative many of us are dreaming of.

I’ve been inspired to write this policy by Amelia Hruby’s AI series on Off The Grid podcast, and in particular, her episode with Dr Kate Henry.

I’ll be talking to Amelia about Resisting De-Skilling in the Age of AI on my Spirals series on June 2nd. You can sign up for free here.

This policy was produced May 2026 and may be reviewed as technology develops and my own learning around this topic deepens.
